Law Firm News and Mergers

Polsinelli PC announced the addition of Rachel Adams to the firm’s health care practice as a shareholder in the firm’s Chicago office. She brings more than a decade of helping guide health systems through regulatory requirements.

Ms. Adams focuses her practice on general corporate matters and complex transactions in the healthcare industry such as Stark Law, the Anti-Kickback Statute and state corporate practice of medicine laws. She is a member of the American Health Law Association, regularly presenting on health care transaction topics.

“I am very excited to join Polsinelli and its nationally known health care practice. I was drawn to Polsinelli’s dedication to the health care industry and its breadth of expertise in supporting health care clients,” said Ms. Adams. “I look forward to collaborating with the Polsinelli team to provide well-rounded, practical advice to help clients achieve their business objectives.”

John Goldfinch joined Proskauer Rose LLP as a partner in the firm’s global finance practice. He brings with him over 20 years of experience in structured finance, focusing on collateralized loan obligations (CLO).

Mr. Goldfinch advises managers on all aspects of the life cycle of a CLO issuance. This includes new issue deals, platform structuring and set up and reissues and refinancings. In addition, he advises on restructurings and other asset workouts.

Kramer Levin announced plans to combine with preeminent global firm Herbert Smith Freehills (HSF). The combined firm will be known as Herbert Smith Freehills Kramer, HSF Kramer in the U.S.

The firm will strengthen and balance in transactional practices and litigation. It will better allow them to better serve their elite client base with more than 2,700 lawyers, including 600+ partners, working across 25 offices.

The move is driven by a shared commitment to servicing clients and puting them at the center of everything the firms do.

Legal Industry Awards and Recognition

Katten announced that private wealth partners Kevin T. Keen and Nicholas J. Heuer were honored in the Future Leaders Awards 2024 by Citywealth.

Mr. Keen was namedas the Outstanding Individual of the Year, while Mr. Heuer was recognized with a silver award in the Private Investment/Family Office Individual of the Year category.

The awards program aims to support future leaders excelling in their work while making important contributions to society. Mr. Keen and Mr. Heuer were chosen by online voting and a judges’ panel.

Kyle Konwinski, a litigation attorney at Varnum LLP, was voted chair-elect of the Environmental Law Section of the State Bar of Michigan. He will continue as Chair of the Litigation and Administrative Law Committee within the section as well.

Mr. Konwinski will support leadership initiatives, such as educating the Bar’s members on environmental law and promoting the understanding and appreciation of the state’s laws, as well as organizing events for section members and the community.

Recognized by Top Lawyers, Mr. Konwinski focuses his practice on representing clients in compliance and litigation including under the state Natural Resources and Environmental Protection Act.

Kate Cole, co-head of intellectual property at Moore & Van Allen, was recognized in IAM Strategy 300: The World’s Leading IP Strategists 2025 alongside intellectual property counsel Sam Merritt.

The IAM Strategy 300 recognizes leaders in development and implementation of strategies that maximize intellectual property portfolios, as well for their skill sets and insights into patent matters by market sources.

DEI and Women in Law

Jackson Lewis P.C. announced that Kirsten A. Milton will succeed Nadine C. Abrahams as the Chicago office managing principal. Alison B. Crane will assume the role of office litigation manager, with Neil H. Dishman being reappointed as office business development liaison.

Ms. Milton focuses her practice on representing management in labor and employment issues. She defends employers in litigation under state wage-and-hour laws, as well as the Fair Labor Standards Act. In addition, she has experience with the Age Discrimination in Employment Act and the Americans with Disabilities Act.

“I am honored to take the reins in Chicago,” said Ms. Milton. “Nadine’s tenure saw the office through a global pandemic and a transition to a hybrid work environment, all while achieving continued growth. Her contributions have been instrumental to our presence in the region, and we plan to build upon the solid foundation she has laid. I am eager to work with our team to continue strengthening our standing as an industry leader in employment law.”

Winston & Strawn LLP announced that Kathi Vidal is rejoining the firm’s litigation department as a partner in the Silicon Valley and Washington, D.C. offices. She is returning after stepping down as the Undersecretary of Commerce for Intellectual Property and Director of the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).

During her stint, Ms. Vidal made progress in reshaping the USPTO to benefit citizens, serving as an advisor to the presidential administration on intellectual property regarding artificial intelligence innovation and technological standards.

“It has been the honor of a lifetime to serve the American public by working alongside my incredible colleagues across government and leading the thousands of talented and dedicated employees at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office,” said Ms. Vidal. “I made the decision to rejoin Winston because of its incredible team and culture which is well-positioned to handle the issues of the future. I look forward to supporting the firm’s clients with the same passion and advocacy I brought to government service.”

Ms. Vidal has gained recognition as one of the country’s leading patent litigators. She will focus her practice assisting clients in maintaining a leading edge in critical innovations, such as next-generation semiconductors.

Law Firm Hiring and Expansion

Barnes & Thornburg expanded its downtown Chicago office, marking the city’s largest law firm lease transaction to date in 2024. The firm’s office, located in the Irvine Company’s trophy tower at One North Wacker, will grow by 30 percent under this expansion. Barnes & Thornburg’s Chicago office currently has more than 135 attorneys and is one of the 25 largest law offices in Chicago.

“Our One North Wacker office has long served as a crucial hub for collaboration and innovation among our attorneys, business professionals, clients, and community partners,” said Michael A. Carrillo, managing partner of Barnes & Thornburg’s Chicago office. “This new, expanded space will help us foster even more in-person connection, bringing our legal capabilities and service to the next level.”

“Chicago businesses are facing increasingly complex legal and regulatory hurdles,” added Andrew J. Detherage, firm managing partner. “Not only will this new lease extend our commitment to innovation and collaboration and help our attorneys provide the robust and sophisticated counsel needed to tackle such challenges, it will also deepen our footprint in a market critical to the firm’s long-term growth strategy.”

Jackson Lewis welcomed William “Billy” Jackson and Eric B. Moody as principals in its Norfolk and Tampa offices, respectively.

Mr. Jackson earned his J.D. from Stanford Law School and his B.A. from Brigham Young University. His practice is focused on white-collar criminal defense and conducting internal investigations for companies facing allegations of misconduct.

“We are thrilled to welcome Billy to the Norfolk team,” said Norfolk office managing principal and litigation manager Kristin H. Vaquera. “His deep understanding of government investigations and enforcement actions will be a tremendous asset to our clients, helping them navigate the complexities of regulatory compliance.”

Mr. Moody received his J.D. from Stetson University College of Law and his B.S. from the University of South Florida. He represents clients in labor and employment litigation issues and in actions brought under federal and state consumer protection statutes.

Sharkey, the managing principal at Jackson Lewis’s Tampa office, welcomed Mr. Moody to the team: “His impressive track record in handling high-stakes litigation—from discrimination and retaliation claims to wage and hour disputes—will significantly strengthen our ability to deliver strategic, results-driven solutions. Sandra K. Newman and Rebecca Eberhardt joined Venable LLP as the firm’s first private wealth planning practitioners in its Chicago office. Ms. Newman and Ms. Eberhardt focus their practices on wealth, estate and gift tax planning, philanthropic planning, trusts and estates.

Legal Industry Awards and Recognition

Bracewell announced that partners K. Brock Bailey and Aaron P. Roffwarg were named to Lawdragon’s 2024 500 Leading Global Real Estate Lawyers list.

Lawdragon provides free online editorial features and news, as well as guides to top US lawyers in different practice areas based on their work from the past year. This year’s list includes various geographic markets.

Mr. Bailey is the managing partner of Bracewell’s Dallas office, as well as a member of the firm’s management committee. He represents developers, borrowers, owners and lenders in the development and acquisition of large commercial and industrial projects.

Mr. Roffwarg is the chair of Bracewell’s Real Estate practice in the firm’s Houston office, who counsels clients on property and construction project transactions, including complex midstream oil and gas projects, pipelines and terminals.

Anthony (Tony) Oncidi, co-chair of Proskauer’s Labor & Employment Department, was named a 2024 Top Labor & Employment Lawyer in California by the Daily Journal.

Mr. Oncidi is a partner in Proskauer’s Los Angeles office who heads the West Coast Labor & Employment group. His experience in high-end employment law with nation-wide employers has established him as a trusted advisor and litigator in non-compete covenants and whistleblower claims.

The Daily Journal is a nationwide corporation which provides attorneys with up-to-date information and news that they require for their practice, including webinars, legal notices, quizzes and resources.

Moore & Van Allen announced that their Patent practice group was ranked in top categories in 2024 Patent Bots Patent Quality Rankings, including as a Top 10 firm in networking, multiplexing, cable and security.

Patent Bots offers patent-specific machine-learning tools and interfaces, with the rankings being made from evaluations over the year of issued patents.

Moore & Van Allen’s team offers a wide range of patent services, such as prosecution and validity options. They also assist clients with due diligence review, litigation, research and development agreements and management and development of patent portfolios.

DEI and Women in Law

Corporate Counsel recognized Amber Rogers, hiring partner of Hunton Andrews Kurth’s Dallas office and a member of the firm’s executive committee, with a 2024 Women, Influence & Power in Law Award.

Corporate Counsel will celebrate Ms. Rogers’ Collaborative Leadership award, designated for women leaders and allies demonstrating commitment to advancing and empowering women in law, on September 24 at the Women, Influence & Power in Law Conference in Chicago.

Massachusetts Lawyers Weekly awarded CMBG3 Law the 2024 Empowering Women award, bestowed on law firms exhibiting strong commitment and support for women attorneys in Massachusetts.

As a majority women-owned law firm since its inception, CMBG3 Law continues its dedication to empowering women attorneys. Over half of the firm’s professionals are women and women comprise over 80% of the firm’s Senior Leadership Team.

Erin Toomey, partner at Foley & Lardner LLP, was acclaimed as one of Michigan Lawyers Weekly‘s Influential Women of Law. The Influential Women of Law awards honor women attorneys for excellence in work, commitment to community and service to the profession.

Ms. Toomey is a partner in the firm’s Government Procurement and Government Solutions Practices, where she helps businesses minimize their risk and maximize their recovery in government contracting.

Daniel Attaway, partner at Womble Bond Dickinson, took part in the Moments to Movements Hackathon. The Hackathon, hosted by Diversity Lab, is a “shark-tank style pitch competition” that meets to solve some of the most challenging DEI issues facing the legal industry.

Mr. Attaway practices life sciences and pharmaceutical law, representing clients in patent litigation and trade secrets. He also serves on the firm’s diversity committee and is co-chair of the firm’s IP content committee.

July 2021 Legal Industry News: Attorney Hiring, Law Firm Awards & Innovation

Happy July! We’re back with another edition of our legal industry news roundup. Read on for the latest law firm hiring, pro bono, and legal innovation news.

Law Firm Hiring & Moves

Much Shelist Law announced new management committee members and practice leaders for their firm.

Sheryl Jaffee Halpern, the chair of Much’s Labor and Employment group, joined the Management Committee. In her labor and employment practice, Ms. Halpern provides guidance to employers, devising practical solutions for complicated legal and business problems.

“The Much culture allows each individual to grow and develop, and I look forward to fostering our people-first philosophy as a member of our senior leadership team,” said Ms. Halpern. “I’m proud to be part of a firm that understands the power of diverse viewpoints when it comes to building a creative and collaborative workplace.”

Courtney E. Mayster, the chair of Much’s Real Estate group, joined the management committee. Ms. Mayster a commercial real estate attorney guides lenders, property owners, and investors through complex projects.

Mayer Brown named John Nadolenco as managing partner of the firm’s Los Angeles office. Mr. Nadolenco joined Mayer Brown in 1995 and whose civil litigation and trial practice focuses on high-stakes cases and class action defense.

“It’s a tremendous honor to assume the responsibility of leading the Los Angeles office, which is a key strategic geography of the firm’s West Coast footprint,” said Mr. Nadolenco.

“John is an exceptionally talented litigator who has held a number of key leadership roles at Mayer Brown, and is highly regarded in the Los Angeles business community and throughout the firm,” said Jon Van Gorp,  the chair of Mayer Brown.

Kennedy’s Global Law firm added Judith A. Selby as a partner in their New York office. Ms. Selby brings a wealth of knowledge and almost 30 years’ experience in the insurance litigation field, with a concentration in cyber and data privacy, and adds to Kennedys’ growing US niche in cyber incident response and data privacy compliance.

“I’m delighted to join Kennedys’ global Cyber and Privacy practice. Increasingly, cyber and privacy issues are international and have no borders. My clients will benefit from the firm’s deep bench and global resources as they confront today’s most challenging cyber, privacy, and technology-related issues,” said Ms. Selby.

Manatt, Phelps & Phillips, LLP added Ted Hunter as a real estate partner in its New York office. Mr. Hunter advises on investment, funding and joint ventures, with work ranging from acquisitions, dispositions and leases to financings, workouts and development transactions.

“A respected figure across the commercial real estate sector, particularly in New York and New Jersey, Ted excels at navigating complex real estate deals by finding common ground between his clients and other involved parties,” said Donna L. Wilson, Manatt’s CEO and Managing Partner.

Pro Bono & Recognition

The Public Interest Law Initiative’s (PILI) Pro Bono Recognition List recognized Barnes & Thornburg’s pro bono efforts, alongside 47 other law firms.

“We are deeply grateful for the recognition that PILI has bestowed on us for the sixth year in a row. We have worked diligently in the Chicago office to increase and enhance our pro bono activities. This recognition is a testament to our firm’s long-standing tradition of providing pro bono services to those in need,” said Kevin Driscoll, pro bono administrator for Barnes & Thornburg’s Chicago office.

Steptoe & Johnson PLLC is one of more than 160 law firms participating in the Mansfield Rule 5.0 certification process. The Mansfield certification process ensures firms are considering at least 30 percent women, racially and ethnically diverse disabled and LGBTQ lawyers for promotions and leadership roles.

“Mansfield certification is the gold standard for law firms that are committed to increasing diversity among their lawyers and professional ranks, and in leadership roles,” said Steptoe & Johnson CEO Christopher L. Slaughter.

Law Firm Awards & Innovation

The Chicago Daily Law Bulletin and Chicago Lawyer Magazine recognized Susan A. Capra, a partner at Clifford Law Offices, as one of the 50 Salute! Woman in Law in 2021.

The Law Bulletin/Chicago Lawyer selection committee, Ms. Capra’s peers, and a Women’s Advisory Board selected Ms. Capra for the award from a pool of over 400 nominees. The committee selected the awardees  “for their work to mentor and promote other women in the profession, their success in the legal community and being a shining example of leadership.”

Ms. Capra, who is also a registered nurse, focuses her practice on hospital and medical negligence litigation.

“I am honored to be among those recognized for this honor in a profession to which I have dedicated my life,” she said.

The Legal 500 United States included 90 Katten Muchin Rosenman law firm attorneys on its 2021 guide. Katten received recognition as leader in 21 practice areas.

Top Legal Industry News for June 2021: Law Firm Hires, Pro-Bono, & Innovation

Summer is upon us and we’re back with another edition of the National Law Review’s legal industry news column. This week, we cover the latest law firm hiring, pro bono, and legal award recognition news. Read on for the latest updates:

Law Firm Hires & Moves

The Young Lawyers’ Section (YLS) of the Chicago Bar Association named Clifford Law Offices’ Tracy Brammeier as its next chair as well as an executive council at the YLS Annual Meeting held June 2, 2021.

Ms. Brammeier’s practice focuses on aviation, transportation, premises, and construction liability in addition to other areas of personal injury and wrongful death litigation. She also participated in the YLS Wills for Heroes project.

“For the last year, we have all worked to stay in touch with clients and colleagues, trying to adapt as we lost access to in-person meetings, hearings, and events,” said Ms. Brammeier. “As we figure out our ‘new normal’ in a post-COVID world, the YLS is more essential to its members than ever before by providing a consistent space for legal education and social engagement to sustain the community environment that is so important to our professional success and personal fulfillment.”

Steven M. Regan joined Steptoe & Johnson’s Business Department in its Pittsburgh office. Mr. Regan’s practice focuses on real estate, real estate development, and corporate transactions. Mr. Regan represents real estate investors in structuring real estate investments and executing acquisition and financing of projects in all asset classes.

“I am excited to welcome Steve to Steptoe & Johnson PLLC. He will be an asset to both our real estate and transactional teams,” said firm CEO Christopher L. Slaughter. “Veteran attorneys like Steve who know how to get positive results and build lasting relationships are a crucial part of our long-term effort to expand services to new and existing clients in the Pittsburgh market.”

Norris McLaughlin law firm hired new attorneys to join the Pennsylvania office’s litigation practice, as well as the addition of one summer associate. The new hires include:

  • Thomas H. Dinkelacker concentrates on municipal, land use, and real estate law and represents clients before zoning hearing boards, code appeal boards, governing bodies, and various Pennsylvania Courts.
  • Rebecca J. Grausam-Charamella focuses on complex litigation matters and represents a multitude of clients at jury trials, hearings, mediations, and arbitrations. She also served as a trial attorney for State Farm Insurance Company for eight years.
  • Andrew J. Shaw concentrates his practice on commercial litigation, and has a wide range of experience through all phases of litigation in both state and federal courts.
  • William R. Murphy III defends individuals involved in civil litigation for general liability matters. He also represents insurance carriers, and he has experience in insurance fraud and automobile accidents.
  • Rocco Beltrami will temporarily join as a summer associate to assist the attorneys while he is in law school at Villanova Charles Widger School of Law.

“We are excited to be growing in a way where we are continuously adding exceptional talent to our roster of great attorneys here at Norris McLaughlin,” said the Honorable Emil Giordano (Ret.), a member of the firm and co-chair of its Litigation Practice Group.

Manatt, Phelps and Phillips, LLP law firm announced the addition of Naeun Rim to their Los Angeles firm as a litigation partner. Ms. Rim represents clients at the intersection of civil litigation and white-collar defense matters across the health care, financial services, entertainment and technology industries.

Ms. Rim is also one of a few Asian American women to serve as trial counsel for a Fortune 150 company in one of California’s biggest environmental trials.

“Naeun will be a strong asset to what our clients view as a well-established litigation powerhouse,” Donna L. Wilson, Manatt’s CEO and managing partner said in the announcement.

Democracy Forward named lawyer Skye Perryman as its new President and Chief Executive Officer.  Ms. Perryman is a founding litigator of the organization. As president and CEO, Ms. Perryman will focus on confronting unlawful threats to democracy and social progress. She succeeds Anne Harkavy, the organization’s founding executive director.

“As we continue to see the basic values of our democracy under attack, Skye Perryman is the right leader at the right time for Democracy Forward,” said Marc Elias, head of the Political Law practice at Perkins Coie and chair of the board of Democracy Forward. “She is a successful litigator, effective strategist, and a coalition builder who is committed to taking on critical fights to advance social progress and democratic values. We are all thrilled to welcome Skye back to Democracy Forward to lead its next phase at a time when the stakes for our nation’s future could not be higher.”

Ms. Perryman most recently served as Chief Legal Officer and General Counsel of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, where she worked to enhance access and equity in women’s health care.

“We must use all tools at our disposal to fight for the promise of democracy at this crucial moment. It is an honor to be rejoining the team at Democracy Forward as we expand the scope and reach of our work.” said Ms. Perryman.

Law Firm Philanthropy and Pro Bono

Jackson Lewis P.C. partnered with The Association of Corporate Counsel’s Employment and Labor Law Network (ACC) to develop “RACE Talks: Realign Act Change Engage,”  a racial equity program that focuses on individual transformation and change to create a more racially just workplace and society. The RACE Talks program highlighted specific actions to advance social justice in society, and included podcasts, videos and articles.

Jackson Lewis’ Samia M. Kirmani led workplace bias sessions and facilitated live discussions with Michael D. Thomas and Tanya A. BovéeWeldon H. Latham also added to the discussions.

“We were thrilled that ACC asked Jackson Lewis to create a program designed to advance racial justice,” said Ms. Bovée. “2020 was a racial awakening for many, and this was the perfect opportunity to focus on how individuals can transform and bring about positive change. We created this program with the goal that participants would step outside of their comfort zone, disrupt their own status quo, and think differently about race and the concept of bias.”

North Carolina’s Pro Bono Resource Center inducted four Ward and Smith law firm attorneys into the 2020 North Carolina Pro Bono Honor Society. Despite the challenges 2020 brought, Mary CavanaughChris EdwardsPaul Fanning and Lance Martin participated in a wide range of pro bono activities across the state.

“Many North Carolina attorneys recognized the needs brought about by COVID-19 and provided pro bono legal services to help ensure that ‘justice shall be administered without favor, denial, or delay,’ as is mandated by our state’s Constitution,” said North Carolina Supreme Court Chief Justice Paul Newby in the announcement.

Frost Brown Todd (FBT) is celebrating Juneteenth this year by providing the entirety of the ParentPreneur Foundation’s $10,000 Father’s Day grant awards, where ten dads of color will receive $1,000 a piece for their start-up businesses.

The ParentPreneur Foundation provides opportunities for black entrepreneurs who are in the start-up business to get a leg up and get started and strives to empower these parents to leave a good legacy for their children.

“The world of start-ups is a challenge no matter who you are, but that is especially true of Black entrepreneurs,” said Terrence Reeves, chair of FBT’s Venture Capital industry team. “Funding this grant is another example of how Frost Brown Todd’s venture capital services go beyond just providing legal support. Being part of this project at a time when the U.S. is celebrating Juneteenth makes it all that more special. We look forward to seeing the impact this grant program will make on the lives and livelihoods of the recipients.”

Legal Industry Awards & Recognition

The Globe and Mail named McCarthy Tétrault as a recipient of its first Report on Business Top 25 Best B2B Brands award. McCarthy Tétrault earned the top honor in the legal category out of 11 law firms.

The Best B2B Brands is a new research initiative from the Globe and Mail’s Report on Business Magazine with Ipsos. The list is based on 42 different evaluations related to culture, innovation and other initiatives from 406 Canadian executives who were surveyed in January and February of this year.

“This acknowledgement is a true testament to our firm’s core values of investing in our people, our clients and our communities,” said Dave Leonard, CEO at McCarthy Tétrault. “Our top priority has always been our clients’ sustained success, and we recognize that the best way to achieve this is to support a collaborative, inclusive and innovative culture that evolves with the pace of business.”

For the third year in a row, the Legal 500 United States 2021 ranked MoginRubin in the category of Antitrust and Civil Litigation/Class Actions: Plaintiff. The Legal 500 ranks practice areas nationally instead of by state.

The Legal 500 recognized the following MoginRubin attorneys:

Greenberg Traurig law firm received the Morgan Stanley Leadership in Excellence in Inclusion and Diversity award.  Bradford D. Kaufman, Greenberg Traurig co-president and the global chairman of Professional Development and Integration, accepted the award on behalf of the firm.

Greenberg Traurig invested $5 million over five years to address systemic racism and launched a Justice Action Initiative to target pro bono work in the areas of economic, social, and racial justice. The firm also joined in creating the Law Firm Anti-Racism Alliance.

Chambers USA recognized Bracewell law firm in its 2021 rankings, giving the firm a Nationwide Band 1 ranking in Oil & Gas (Regulatory & Litigation) for the seventh consecutive year. Bracewell also ranked as a Band 1 firm in the Texas: Environment category for the fifth consecutive year.

Overall, Bracewell ranked with 89 other firms for excellence in representing clients in the real estate, technology, energy and infrastructure sectors. Additionally, Chambers ranked 50 percent of Bracewell’s partners as leaders in their practice areas.

May 2021 Legal Industry News Highlights: Attorney Moves, Law Firm Pro Bono Work & Innovation

We’ve returned with another edition of our legal industry news column for May. Read on for the latest news on attorney promotions, law firm recognition, pro bono work and legal technology and innovation:

Attorney Promotions & Moves

The International Financial Law Review (IFLR) recognized Blakes’ law firm partners Pamela Huff and Catherine Doyle as IFLR1000 Woman Leaders for the quality of their advice and the consistent recommendations of their clients and peers.

Ms. Huff is the head of the Blakes Restructuring & Insolvency group and advises on Canadian business law. Ms. Doyle is a leading member of Blakes’ Project & Financial Services group. Ms. Doyle has been a part of some of the most impactful infrastructure deals in Canada.

Jamie M. Ramsey joined Frost Brown Todd as the newest litigation member of the Cincinnati, Ohio office. Mr. Ramsey’s litigation experience includes breach of contract claims and trademark infringement to class action litigation. Mr. Ramsey also has experience helping clients navigate the legal framework impacting the collection, use, and protection of personal information.

“Jamie’s work with everyone from start-ups to Fortune 500 companies will provide our clients additional insight into how to manage risks to both their operations and reputations,” said Cincinnati Member-in-Charge Chris Habel. “He represents companies in both Ohio and Kentucky, and we couldn’t be more excited to have him in our Cincinnati office.”

Marjorie J. Peerce, managing partner of Ballard Spahr’s New York Office, is the new Vice President of the New York City Bar Association (NYCBA). Ms. Peerce served as Chair of the NYCBA Board of Directors since May 2020. She also formerly served as Chair of the NYCBA’s Criminal Law Committee and served on the Mass Incarceration Task Force. The NYCBA, founded in 1870, works to maintain the high ethical standards of the legal profession and includes over 150 committees.

Ms. Peerce is a founder and leader of Ballard Spahr’s Blockchain Technology and Cryptocurrency team, and handles high profile civil and criminal matters in state and federal courts in New York and around the US.

Adrian Cyhan joined Stubbs, Alderton and Markiles, LLP as a partner in the firm’s Intellectual Property & Technology Transactions practice. Mr. Cyhan is a patent attorney who focuses on identifying, protecting and leveraging intellectual property assets and providing related counsel and advice.

Mr. Cyhan manages intellectual property portfolios and handles intellectual property-related transactions such as joint ventures, acquisitions, and divestitures.

Law Firm Pro Bono & Philanthropy

Bradley Arant Boult Cummings LLP attorneys Corby C. AndersonMatthew S. DeAntonioErin Jane Illman, and Jonathan E. Schulz joined the 2020 class of the North Carolina Pro Bono Honor Society. The attorneys each provided more than 50 hours of pro bono legal services in 2020 to North Carolinians in need.

“Our Charlotte attorneys continue to go above and beyond to provide equal access to justice for all,” said Bradley Pro Bono Counsel Tiffany Graves. “We are very proud of their commitment to the community and their well-earned recognition by the North Carolina Pro Bono Honor Society.”

Bradley Arant Boult Cummings attorneys work with the Safe Alliance’s Victim Assistance/Legal Representation Program to help victims of domestic violence and the Charlotte Center for Legal Advocacy, which helps low income residents of the Charlotte metropolitan area and west-central North Carolina.

The North Carolina Pro Bono Honor Society is administered by the North Carolina Pro Bono Resource Center, which launched in 2016.

The American Bar Association (ABA) Standing Committee on Pro Bono and Public Service selected Sheppard, Mullin, Richter & Hampton as an individual recipient of its 2021 Pro Bono Publico Awards. The awards are scheduled to be presented on the opening day of the 2021 ABA Annual Meeting, which runs through Aug. 10.

The Committee selected Sheppard Mullin for its actions following the death of George Floyd. The firm launched the Active Bystandership for Law Enforcement (ABLE) project with Georgetown Law’s Innovative Policing Program, which came from an initiative to teach officers to become active bystanders and prevent misconduct in the New Orleans Police Department.

The initiative led to Sheppard Mullin successfully litigating cases in California to obtain disclosure of records of police misconduct, as well as executing a plan to manufacture and secure face shields for frontline workers in Los Angeles.

The Committee also selected Cynthia Chandler, the director of Bay Area Legal Incubator, Oakland, California, TerryAnn Howell of Nelson Mullins in Miami, Neal Manne of Susman Godfrey LLP in Houston and Rebecca Rapp of the Ascendium Education Group in Madison, Wisconsin as recipients of the 2021 Pro Bono Publico Awards.

Ms. Chandler grew the Bay Area Legal Incubator with the Alameda County Bar Association and Legal Access Alameda to help coach diverse attorneys on how to build successful, affordable law practices serving low and middle-income clients throughout California.

Ms. Howell helped launch a COVID-19 Small Business and Nonprofit Clinic with Legal Services of Greater Miami at Nelson Mullins through Lawyers for Good Government. She also volunteers alongside other Nelson Mullins attorneys at the Tenants’ Equal Justice Clinic (TEJC), a project of Legal Services of Greater Miami.

Mr. Manne dedicated 40 years of his career to high-impact pro bono work. His accomplishments include being recognized by the American College of Trial Lawyers for his pro bono work, as well as being named Attorney of the Year by Texas Lawyer. Most recently, Mr. Manne helped reform Houston’s money bail system and represented two death row exonerees.

Ms. Rapp helps increase access to areas dubbed as “legal deserts” due to a shortage of attorneys, including a project to provide legal help to technical colleges around Wisconsin. She also assists clients at legal clinics and serves on the boards and committees of several access-to-justice organizations. Ms. Rapp also testified before the Wisconsin Supreme Court on removing limitations on pro bono services.

Legal Aid Service of Broward County (LAS) and Coast to Coast Legal Aid of South Florida (CCLA) announced the recipients of their 2021 Annual Recognition Awards.

LAS and CCLA presented the awards in a series of live presentations via Facebook Live May 4–7, 2021.

The 2021 recipients include:

●               Lauren Alperstein, Esq., of Boies Schiller Flexner LLP received the Attorney of the Year Award.

●                Van Horn Law Group received the Law Firm of the Year award.

●               Ofer Shmucher, Esq. and Shera Anderson, Esq. of Shmucher Law, PL received the Spirit of Justice Award.

●               Theresa Edwards, Esq., of American Justice, P.A. received the Commitment to Justice Award.

●                Anthony J. Karrat, Esq., Executive Director of Legal Aid Service of Broward County received the Russell E. Carlisle Advocacy Award.

●               Edwin Cordova, Esq.Supervising Attorney of the Housing Unit at Legal Aid Service of Broward County received the Jacquelyn and Bruce Rogow Employee of the Year Award.

Law Firm Innovation & Technology

Winstead law firm partnered with Texas Health Catalyst at Dell Medical School at The University of Texas at Austin to support entrepreneurs who are in the early stages of developing healthcare technology products.

Winstead provides entrepreneurs with resources on legal matters such as entity formation, licensing from universities, IP strategy, funding, lease agreements, OSHA, privacy/global agreements, as well as educational programming and opportunities to meet and network with other startup professionals.

“Winstead is committed to moving healthcare technology and the latest innovations in the life sciences industry forward,” said Winstead Shareholder Lekha Gopalakrishnan. “Our collaboration with Texas Health Catalyst is intended to advance their mission of addressing unmet needs in healthcare through technology innovation.”

Davidoff Hutcher & Citron LLP (DHC), a New York-based commercial law and government relations firm, formed their Cannabis Practice Group to help clients navigate regulations around adult recreational marijuana in New York State. DHC’s Cannabis Practice Group builds upon DHC’s decades of experience in highly regulated and similar industries, such as New York’s wine, liquor and packaged goods industries.

“The Office of Cannabis Management will be implementing laws and regulations governing the growing and evolving cannabis industry in New York. They will be similar to those that govern entities regulated by the State Liquor Authority, and both will exist under a tiered system,” said Steve Malito, Chair of the Cannabis Practice Group. “Davidoff Hutcher & Citron is uniquely qualified to advise our clients in the cannabis space as they navigate the complexities of these regulations.”

In line with recent Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) efforts nationwide, Schiff Hardin announced the formation of their new ESG Team to help companies develop programs and company disclosures that incorporate the many ESG principles. Amy Antoniolli leads the team along with key members Sarah FittsJane Montgomery, and Katherine Walton.

The Latest Legal Industry News: Attorney Promotions, Law Firm Innovation & Firm Recognition

Welcome back to another edition of our legal and consulting industry news column. Below, we discuss the latest attorney promotions, lawyer recognition and law firm innovation. Keep reading for all the latest news:

Attorney Hires and Promotions

Peter W. Thomas was elected the new President and Managing Partner of Powers Pyles Sutter & Verville P.C., effective April 1, 2021.  Mr. Thomas succeeds Jim Jorling, who held the position since 2016.

Mr. Thomas joined Powers in 1991 and has been a Principal in the firm since 1996. Mr. Thomas focuses his practice on disability and rehabilitation policy, Medicare coverage and reimbursement and other areas of healthcare policy.

Matthew A. Rossi joined Vedder Price as a Shareholder in their Government Investigations & White Collar defense group. Mr. Rossi previously served as Assistant Chief Litigation Counsel in the Securities and Exchange Commission’s (SEC) Enforcement Division, where he primarily investigated and litigated violations of the federal securities laws by investment advisers, broker-dealers, large financial institutions and others. Mr. Rossi also served as Senior Counsel in the SEC’s Asset Management Unit, a specialized unit within the Enforcement Division that investigates misconduct by investment advisers, private funds and registered investment companies.

“Matt’s outstanding experience and credentials, in particular at the SEC’s home office in the Asset Management Unit and as Assistant Chief Litigation Counsel, are a great fit for our practice,” said Junaid A. Zubairi, Chair of the firm’s Government Investigations & White Collar Defense group.

Alison P. Snyder joined Romer Debbas LLP as an associate, supporting the residential real estate practice. Ms. Snyder specializes in assisting buyers, sellers and lending institutions involved in residential real estate transactions. She also has experience in pre-contract due diligence, including the review of offering plans, financial statements, and co-op/condo board minutes.

Scott W. MacCormack was confirmed as Davis Wright Tremaine’s new managing partner, who will begin his new position this summer. Mr. MacCormack, who joined the firm in 2008, served on the Executive Committee for six years,  also chaired the firm’s Compensation Committee, and served as co-chair of the firm’s energy practice.

“Scott is committed to executing our strategic plan to drive growth, building on our commitment to foster a more diverse, equitable, and inclusive environment, and strengthening the firm’s culture as we evolve how we work post-pandemic,” said Jeffrey P. Gray, who was the former managing partner. “He is an excellent choice to maintain the firm’s success and continue to grow it.”

Attorney and Law Firm Recognition

Fourteen Gilbert attorneys were recognized on the 2020 Capital Pro Bono Honor Roll, which represents nearly half of the attorneys at the firm. The 2020 Capital Pro Bono Honor Roll highlights attorneys in Washington, D.C. who have contributed 50 hours or more of pro bono work to those who cannot afford legal counsel.

Chief Judge Anna Blackburne-Rigsby of the District of Columbia Court of Appeals and Chief Judge Anita Josey-Herring of the Superior Court of the District of Columbia said of the winners, “we salute you for using your talents and expertise to help those unable to afford an attorney.”

All attorneys and employees at Gilbert participate in public service activities, including substantial pro bono legal work, including participation in and support of public interest organizations, community initiatives, and local educational and charitable activities. The firm makes itself available to individuals and organizations who need expert legal assistance in a wide variety of areas including immigration, family law, torts, civil rights, housing, special education, insurance, and asylum. The D.C. Chief Judges further noted that, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, they “saw even greater need for pro bono service in 2020.”

BTI Consulting ranked Barnes and Thornburg as No. 38 on its 2021 Client Service A-Team list, a 19-place climb from the firm’s previous ranking. Barnes and Thornburg ranked within the top 25 firms for categories such as “Deals with Unexpected Changes,” “Fielding the Absolute Best Team,” “Quality Products,” “Quickly Assessing Your Situation” and “Understands the Client’s Business.”

To determine what firms made the list, BTI Consulting conducted a survey of 350 top legal decision-makers at large organizations with $700 million or more in revenue. However, only 282 law firms were mentioned by name for the categories surveyed by legal decision makers.

Lex Machina, a LexisNexis company and a leading provider of Legal Analytics® to law firms and companies, recognized Perkins Coie as a leading firm for patent litigation defense in 2020 in its annual Patent Litigation Report. The firm ranked second for national law firms handling the most patent defense cases with 72 cases across 18 jurisdictions.

Perkins Coie also ranked as one of the top firms for petitioners in post-grant proceedings. Lex Machina develops the rankings by summarizing federal district court data from the past decade and post-grant data since the Patent Trial and Appeal Board’s (PTAB) inception in 2012. Lex Machina’s report also highlights the top patent litigation trends from the past year.

Law Firm Innovation and Development

The Wage & Hour Guide for Employers app from Epstein Becker Green (EBG) was recently updated to incorporate employment law changes for 2021. Over 46 states and / or localities had changes to their employment laws that were effective January 1, 2021, and the EBG app was updated to track those changes.  First released in February 2012, the app provides wage and hour information on a variety of employment law concerns, including:

  • Overtime exemptions
  • Minimum wages
  • Overtime
  • Meal periods
  • Rest periods
  • On-call time
  • Travel time
  • Tips

Information on new employment law changes is organized on the app and includes citations to statutes, regulations and guidelines.

Legal tech platform Joinder, incubated at Orrick Labs and helmed by former Orrick partner Don Keller, is now pursuing growth as an independent SaaS (Software as a Service) company.

Joinder facilitates corporate legal department and legal service provider collaboration by creating a single digital workspace for data storage, task management, communications and document management.

Orrick Labs was launched as a way to identify solutions for problems where there was no workable solution in the marketplace.  Mitch Zulkie, Orrick Chairman and CEO, says, “Joinder is the result of our client’s demands for more insight into their records and it is just that: a better platform for legal engagement, built by a team that understands how lawyers and legal departments work together.”
