Google Sticks a Fork in Guest Blogging for SEO (Search Engine Optimization)

Last month, Google’s Matt Cutts, who heads up the search engine giant’s webspam team, wrote this on the Google Webmaster blog:

So stick a fork in it: guest blogging is done; it’s just gotten too spammy. In general I wouldn’t recommend accepting a guest blog post unless you are willing to vouch for someone personally or know them well. Likewise, I wouldn’t recommend relying on guest posting, guest blogging sites, or guest blogging SEO as a link building strategy.

So should you halt your guest blogging efforts?  Well, in a word, no.  Because SEO is not the only reason you guest blog – either on other blogs, or hosting guests on your own blog.  Which is why Cutts later updated his original post to say this:

It seems like most people are getting the spirit of what I was trying to say, but I’ll add a bit more context. I’m not trying to throw the baby out with the bath water. There are still many good reasons to do some guest blogging (exposure, branding, increased reach, community, etc.). Those reasons existed way before Google and they’ll continue into the future.

Guest blogging used to be ONE way to develop quality links back to your own website or blog. Unfortunately, those trying to game the system with low quality content have made it – as Cutts says – a spammy practice.  Those that use guest blogging as their sole source of link building will now be out of luck and may even be penalized.

But I would still recommend guest blogging as a way for attorneys to spread their authority to other audiences that may not have otherwise been engaged by your own blog or website.  It can also still be a great way for you to improve the visibility of your firm and, when shared on social media, can help your SEO efforts from that standpoint.

As this blog post and other recent developments at Google demonstrate, you can’t go wrong when it comes to SEO if you pay attention to these 3 things:

1.  Designing a website that provides users with a superb experience – from the way they navigate the site to the information they find there.

2.  Developing high quality, relevant content for your area of practice that people want to read to help them solve the problems they would hire you for, populated with relevant keywords.

3.  Being an active participant on social media networks that your prospects and clients frequent, sharing all that great content you’ve developed for your website and your blog and engaging online with your target market.

What Every Attorney Should Know About Their Client Database

Do you, as a lawyer, have a client database? Do you have a program (any program) that keeps their names, addresses, and phone numbers on file?
If you do, fantastic!

If not, you should.

Creating (and constantly updating) a database is integral to retaining clients. For every person that you meet with, or even contacts you, you should be getting their information and create a database for mailings.

Why aren’t you sending them out a monthly newsletter to let them know what has been happening in the firm? You may be thinking that people don’t care, right? Well, it’s not entirely untrue. I won’t tell you that people are going to read your newsletters religiously (they might!) but if you keep them in the loop, there is no other lawyer in their minds when they start thinking about signing a contract.

Tell them about a few cases you’ve won, talk about a new employee, or how you’re redecorating your office. Keep everyone in your database (or your “herd”) in the loop.

By taking the time and putting in this effort, you’re becoming more trusted and beloved by members of your herd. Not only do they know what’s happening in your firm, but you are making a constant effort to reach out to them and contact them. It really does make a difference. What other attorney in your area is doing that?

If you think of any at all, it’s probably a very short list. Now think of how many attorneys their actually are in your area. The difference is staggering.

These simple things will make you stand out. You will be different and therefore you will come to mind much more quickly.

Those people will also become excellent marketing that you don’t have to pay for. Word of mouth is one of the best tools to have in your arsonal. Being referred by a client to their friends or family creates another level of marketing that you can’t buy.

Even for other ventures, your herd can be of great benefit to you!

Say you decide to put money into an ad that will run in a newspaper or magazine. Those are great marketing opportunities, I won’t lie, but before you hit the green button, maybe include the ad you want to run in a newsletter to your herd. Make an effort to constantly remind those who already love you what it is you do. Even ask for their opinions! They see your ad from another viewpoint and could even be able to give you some genuine feedback! Show your herd that they are still a priority and you want to keep them around.

This is only possible if you have a database.

Women In-House Counsel Practice Resiliency

The National Association of Women Lawyers (“NAWL”) is a national voluntary legal professional organization devoted to promoting the interests and progress of women lawyers and women’s legal rights.  Founded in 1899, long before most local and national bar associations admitted women, NAWL serves as an educational forum and an active voice for the concerns of women in the legal profession. NAWL is about solutions, both for workplace issues facing women lawyers and for societal problems confronting women in our nation and worldwide.  NAWL continues to support and advance the interests of women in and under the law, and in so doing, supports and advances the social, political, and professional empowerment of women. Through its programs and networks, NAWL provides the tools for women in the profession to advance, prosper and enrich the profession.

In 2006, NAWL challenged corporations and law firms to double the number of women general counsel and equity partners from 15% to 30% by 2015.  Recent statistics indicate that the number of women general counsels in the Fortune 500 hovers around 21% whereas women equity partners at the AmLaw 200 has remained stagnant at barely 15%.  We should be heartened by the success of women in corporate legal departments and wonder why women in the AmLaw 200 have not moved the needle at all, and in fact, have given up some ground.  The progress we have made has been buoyed by the women who came before who have mentored, sponsored and brought along those behind them.  It is also due to the fact that women are resilient.  It is that resiliency that NAWL will celebrate with its 9th Annual General Counsel Institute (“GCI”) that brings together senior in-house women lawyers to learn from each other, inspire each other and take away information that will help them achieve their professional, as well as personal, goals.

This year’s GCI, “Resilience:  Thriving as In-House Counsel in Changing Legal and Business Landscapes,” will be held at the Intercontinental Times Square hotel in New York City on November 7 and 8, 2013.  Highlights of the event include the plenary sessions:

  • Resilience – an interactive opening session acknowledging resilience in the present day, and beginning the process of harnessing that resilience for future success;
  • Thriving in the Face of Challenge – presented by a panel of successful general counsels;
  • The Fundamental and Fragile Bond:  Trust and the Modern Workplace – a panel discussion of the effect that trust, or a lack thereof, has on the advancement of women in the workplace based on research conducted by Catalyst; and
  • In-House Counsel in the Crosshairs, the story of Lauren Stevens, former Associate General Counsel of GlaxoSmithKline who was indicted on – and eventually exonerated of – claims of making false statements and obstruction of justice.

In addition to the plenary sessions, there will be three tracks of breakout sessions on topics critical to the success of in-house counsel:  Hot Topics; Training for New Terrain as In-House Counsel; and Being Brave in the New Legal and Regulatory World.  Participants will also be inspired by the powerful personal stories of resilience by luncheon keynote speakers Michelle Banks, Executive Vice President, General Counsel, Corporate Secretary and Chief Compliance Officer of Gap Inc., and Liz Murray, author of Breaking Night: A Memoir of Forgiveness, Survival, and My Journey From Homeless to Harvard.
