NAWL Celebrates the Twelfth Anniversary of its General Counsel Institute®

Although the legal landscape continues to rapidly evolve, many obstacles still remain for women striving to advance their careers. Identifying opportunities, even ones that may seem unconventional, and seizing upon such opportunities, provides pathways to success that may not have been visible in the past. On November 3-4, the National Association of Women Lawyers’ General Counsel Institute expands on this concept with a program entitled, Pathways to Success: Embracing Opportunities with Agility and Creativity.

For twelve years, the General Counsel Institute (“GCI”) has provided an incomparable outlet for women who serve as in-house counsel across the country to discuss pertinent issues that affect their companies. Whether learning and discussing substantive legal matters or attending workshops that focus on professional development, GCI ensures that attendees are gaining insight and knowledge throughout the two-day conference.

But what really makes GCI unique is the inclusive atmosphere of the conference. Attendees range from General Counsel from Fortune 500 companies to in-house counsel for smaller boutique companies, all intermingling and providing valuable insight in a relaxed, friendly, and collaborative setting. The approachability of the speakers, as well as the attendees and organizers, encourages everyone to excitedly anticipate the conference each year.

The mission of National Association of Women Lawyers (“NAWL”) is to provide leadership, a collective voice, and essential resources to advance women in the legal profession and advocate for the equality of women under the law. NAWL was founded in 1899 by a group of eighteen (18) women lawyers in New York City and originally called The Women Lawyer’s Club (“Club”). In 1915, women’s suffrage became the first major project undertaken by the Club. Three-time Club President, Olive Scott Gabriel, argued for women’s voting rights across the country. Four years later, Congress passed the 19th Amendment to the United States Constitution, prohibiting any United States citizen from being denied the right to vote on the basis of sex. The Club’s membership mobilized to work for ratification by the states. It also worked consistently on social legislation – including child labor laws, minimum wage, divorce and marriage laws, the right for a woman to keep her name after marriage, and the right for women to serve on juries. In 1923, due to increasing nationwide membership, the Club became the National Association of Women Lawyers. That same year, it held its first national convention in Minneapolis with Chief Justice William Howard Taft.

In 1935, NAWL became one of the first national organizations to endorse the Equal Rights Amendment (“ERA”), first introduced to Congress in 1922. The ERA became one of NAWL’s highest priorities for the next several decades. In 1943, NAWL became an affiliated organization of the American Bar Association. It led the creation of opportunities for women to serve in the military and had more than 150 of its members serving in the Woman’s Army Corp., Women Accepted for Voluntary Emergency Service, and the Marine Corp.’s Women’s Reserve. In 1952,

NAWL drafted the Uniform Divorce Bill, calling it “the greatest project NAWL has ever undertaken.” In 1972, Congress passed the ERA and NAWL members embraced this victory by seeking ratification of the amendment by the states – a feat that would take until March 22, 1984 when Mississippi ratified it. In 1985, NAWL began granting membership to male applicants.

Two decades later, the then Immediate Past President of NAWL, Stephanie Scharf, now a partner at Scharf Banks Marmor LLC, founded the General Counsel Institute (“GCI”). Scharf targeted the meeting to senior corporate counsel who had the goal of advancing to the role of chief legal officer. She recognized the need for in-house attorneys to build top-tier professional and management skills in a supportive and interactive learning environment and to learn from experienced officers and directors about the points of pressure and success for general counsels. Together with NAWL President Lorraine Koc, then General Counsel and EEO Officer at Deb Shops, Inc. (now Senior Counsel at SugarHouse Casino) and NAWL President Elect, Cathy Fleming, then a partner at Edwards and Angell, LLP (now a partner at Fleming.Ruvoldt PPLC), Scharf quickly formed a planning committee which consisted of themselves, as a well as Carole Basri, then adjunct professor at University of Pennsylvania School of Law (now adjunct professor at Fordham University School of Law), Caroline K. Cheng, then Management Principal and Associate General Counsel at Deloitte LLP (now General Counsel at PricewaterhouseCooper LLP), Dorian Denburg, then Chief Rights-of-Way Counsel for BellSouth Corporation (now Executive Director- Senior Legal Counsel for AT&T Services, Inc.), Michelle Speller-Thurman, then a partner at Jenner & Block (now Division Counsel at Abbott Laboratories), and Betty-Lynn White (now an Adjunct and Area Chair for the University of Phoenix and Adjunct Professor at Albertus Magnus College). The Committee arranged plenary and workshop sessions to foster frank discussions about what it takes to be promoted and provide the means to improve skills and knowledge in a collegial atmosphere. They developed an innovative CLE program with opportunities to learn and network with other senior legal and business professionals and featured speakers Peter Harvey, then Attorney General of New Jersey, Catherine R. Kinney, then Co-Chief Operating Officer of the New York Stock Exchange, and Carol Robles-Román, Deputy Mayor, New York City. GCI met with rave reviews!

This year’s GCI will feature keynote speeches from accomplished General Counsel and business leaders who will focus on discussing their successful career paths, as well as providing advice and tips on how attendees can do the same. Keynote speakers will include:

  • Teresa Wynn Roseborough, Executive Vice President, General Counsel and Corporate Secretary, The Home Depot U.S.A., Inc.

  • Monique Svazlian Tallon, CEO & Founder, Highest Path Consulting

  • H. Gwen Marcus, Executive Vice President, General Counsel, Showtime Networks Inc.

  • Lauren Stiller Rikleen, President, Rikleen Institute for Strategic Leadership

  • Karen Hough, Founder & CEO, ImprovEdge, LLC

Through programs like GCI, NAWL has been empowering women in the legal profession and cultivating a diverse membership dedicated to equality, mutual support, and collective success.

May 28th – NAWL Pipeline to Equity Partnership Program, Chicago

NAWLJustSeal215x260

The National Association of Women Lawyers (NAWL) and Chicago’s Coalition of Women’s Initiatives in Law are joining forces to help usher the next generation of women law firm leaders into place with a program entitled Pipeline to Equity Partnership (P2P).  The program will be held at Loyola University Law School from 11:30 AM to 5:00 PM, followed by a networking reception.   P2P is aimed at women on the brink of equity partnership, in either a one-tier or two-tier law firm system.  This is the third presentation of NAWL’s P2P program nationwide, and its first time in Chicago.

The P2P program is an attempt to move the dial on the numbers of women in law firm leadership by offering a forum to identify and discuss challenges women face as they reach for the top.

The P2P program will begin with a luncheon presentation from Andrea (“Andie”) Kramer, a partner at McDermott Will & Emery.  Andie Kramer is well known as a longtime motivating force in the effort to both advance more women to leadership roles and equity partnership in law firms and to ensure that women are fairly compensated along the way.  She is a founding member of McDermott’s Diversity Committee, and chair of the Gender Diversity Sub-committee.   Andie previously served on both the Firm’s Management and Compensation Committees.

The P2P program will continue with facilitated roundtable group discussion of multiple issue-based scenarios that women face in their journey towards equity partnership.  Discussion will focus on real world experiences such as the departure of a young partner’s sponsor, the loss of previous opportunities for business pitches, handling ethical issues that used to be handled by superiors, the reluctance of a new partner’s colleague to address a client conflict, flexibility and perception of work ethic, or perhaps the overloading of a new partner with uncredited firm administration.

The scenarios will be familiar to attendees and presenters, and will offer an opportunity for both a unique, peer-to-peer discussion and the counsel and perspective of a resource panel of distinguished women law firm leaders, who will offer their counsel and advice.  The panel consisting of law firm leaders, managing partners, and general counsel includes Susie L. Lees, Executive Vice President, General Counsel & Secretary of Allstate Insurance Company, Jennifer A. Kennedy, Managing Partner of Chicago office, Locke Lord LLP, Amy B. Manning, Managing Partner of Chicago office, McGuireWoods LLP, and Angelea Ulum, Co-Chair, Partnership Promotion Committee, Mayer Brown LLP.  The panel will be moderated by Margo O’Donnell, President of the Coalition of Women’s Initiatives in Law and Shareholder at Vedder Price, and Maureen M. Reid, President of Maureen M. Reid, LLC and a co-founder of the P2P program. The resource panel will offer advice for handling the scenarios discussed in the roundtables and will answer attendees’ questions about navigating the way to equity partnership.

Program participants will leave the program with a much better sense of what roadblocks may exist on the path to equity partnership and how to overcome them.  Those interested in registering for the P2P Program can get all of the information and register at http://www.nawl.org/p/cm/ld/&fid=168.

NAWL has conducted an annual survey of Am Law 200 law firms since 2005 in an effort to measure the progress in the percentage of women equity partners in law firms.  NAWL’S annual Report on the Retention and Promotion of Women in Law Firms has established the fact that those numbers have stagnated for years between 15% and 17% despite women graduating from law school at equal rates for decades.  The P2P program is an attempt to move the dial on the numbers of women in law firm leadership by offering a forum to identify and discuss challenges women face as they reach for the top.

Women In-House Counsel Achieve Success

The National Association of Women Lawyers (“NAWL”) is 114 years old this year. It is not only the oldest women’s bar association, it is also the only national bar association for women, dedicated to advancing women lawyers and the interests and rights of women under the law. NAWL truly is the voice of women in the law™.

In the last few years, NAWL has seen women lawyers working within in-house corporate legal departments begin to make great strides in their advancement into leadership positions and break through into the higher echelons of the General Counsel’s Office. In 2006, NAWL challenged corporations and law firms to double their number of women general counsel and equity partners from 15% to 30% by 2015. Recent statistics indicate that the “NAWL Challenge” for corporate legal departments in the Fortune 500 corporations already has been met. Women today comprise 30% of General Counsels, when only a few years ago they comprised only 15% of the General Counsels in the same companies. This achievement is in sharp contrast to the fate of women lawyers in the 200 largest U.S. law firms (“AmLaw 200”), where women have stagnated at 17% of equity partners since NAWL’s annual survey of advancement of women lawyers within the AmLaw 200 began.

How have women in corporate legal departments been able to achieve their climb up the corporate ladder — at least compared to the glacial movement of women in large private law firms? Certainly the advancement is due, in part, to the women who have come before them, the trailblazers who always reached back and brought other women along with them, who always were available for consultation and advice and shared their insights and perspectives. It is also due to top-down management and implementation of diversity and inclusion objectives instilled in the corporations by their business leaders and boards of directors. And, I am proud to say that in part the achievements of corporate in-house counsel are due to programs, like the General Counsel Institute (“GCI”), that help to define best practices for women in-house lawyers to achieve their personal and professional aspirations and facilitate their advancement.

This year’s 8th Annual GCI promises to make its own significant contribution to that effort. SUCCESS STRATEGIES—Defining Success and Adding Value as In-House Counsel in the 21st Century will be held at the Intercontinental Times Square in New York City on November 8 and 9, 2012. Highlighting the event will be the plenary sessions, including:

•“Success”—Going Beyond Webster’s Definition, an interactive session focused
on personal definitions of success;

•The Road to Chief Legal Officer, presented by a panel of successful General
Counsels;

•The Myth of the Ideal Worker: Does Doing the Right Thing Really Help Women
Get Ahead?, a panel discussion of practical advice based on research conducted
by Catalyst; and

•Speak Your Truth, Colette Carlson’s presentation on the art of effective self-
promotion).

Breakout sessions will offer three tracks to expand the knowledge of in-house counsel on topics critical to their role in the 21st century: Hot Topics; Turning Crisis into Triumph; and Successful Legal Departments, Successful Companies. Participants will be inspired by remarkable luncheon keynote speakers Sheila Davidson, Executive Vice President, Chief legal Officer and General Counsel of New York Life; and Diana Nyad, one of the world’s greatest long-distance swimmers, author and sports announcer.

The timeliness of the educational programs, the wisdom imparted by the keynote speakers and the unparalleled networking opportunities will offer significant guidance and assistance to in-house counsel as they strive to achieve continued success for themselves and their companies.
